- Without last year's tax, the safe harbor is 90% of this year's tax. Enter last year's total tax to see whether paying 100% (or 110%) of it is lower.
- The tax left after withholding is under $1,000, so no estimated payments are required for this year.
The four periods
The first installment covers January to March, the second April and May, the third June to August and the fourth September to December. The periods are uneven, but under the regular method each installment is a quarter of the required annual payment.
Weekends and holidays
A due date that falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday moves to the next business day. In 2026 all four dates are weekdays. The planner applies the rule each year, including Emancipation Day in Washington, D.C., which moves the April date in some years.
Skipping the January payment
The January 15 payment is not needed if you file the 2026 return and pay all the tax by February 1, 2027. Farmers and fishermen have their own rules, which this planner does not cover.
